Mam, is that a chicken in your bathtub?

Well, no...it's six chickens in my bathtub.

A few months ago, after almost of a year and a half of contemplation, I placed an order for five chickens with My Pet Chicken.  I was able to pick the breeds I wanted and paid the extra for females, since my town only allows hens.  The chicks were to hatch on April 1st, so I had about a month to get ready for them.  I started my chicken research on Pinterest and ordered a few books from Amazon.

Initially I knew that I needed some place to keep the chicks until they were old enough to move outside.  Most people recommend a large cardboard box.  I had planned on that idea, until one link mentioned someone who housed their chicks in an unused guest bathroom.  Hmmm....I have one of those with no guests arriving for months.  It certainly seemed easier than a box that would get wet every time the chicks knock over their water (which is often as they get older and think they can fly).

So on April 3rd, after hatching in Ohio sometime during the night of April 1st-2nd, SIX chicks (yep, they threw in an extra) arrived safely in their bathtub home.  So far we've had no issues with the tub and it gives them a little more room than a large box would have.

More to come on our growing girls...
