Friday favorite...more Savannah
No post about Savannah would be complete without discussing the food, In Savannah you can get a little bit of everything, sometimes in the same restaurant. Now when you think of Savannah you may just think of Paula Deen and true southern cooking. I can assure you there is so much more.
Speaking of Paula Deen, we decided to not visit her restaurant. We heard a few disappointing reviews and also heard about incredibly long wait-times for a table. We did visit the gift shop (which was loaded with tourists swiping up all kinds of memorabilia), so I could pick up a gift for my mom.
Our first meal in town was at Gryphon Tea Room, which was recommended by the great girls at Trunk 13. It is in an old pharmacy and is run by the Savannah College of Art & Design. The wood paneled walls were lined with the original shelves and drawers from the pharmacy. The food was light and unexpected. We shared a turkey, brie and apple sandwich and it was delicious! So delicious that we had it the next day for a late afternoon snack. Their pot of tea has inspired me to drink more tea in the afternoon now that I am home. My cute elephant teapot has been dusted off and brought down off the shelf.
For another lunch we decided to visit Papillote, a little French bistro on West Broughton Street. We arrived early since we had skipped breakfast. The have a seasonal menu that features daily specials. The special that day was a goat cheese and tomato tart. It was perfect with the side salad it came with. They advertise themselves as "gourmet-to-go"m but they do have a few tables to stay and eat. We had the perfect spot in the window so we could watch the world go by.
Before we ever left Florida, I had heard about Garibaldi and their crispy flounder. It was on Pinterest and most food reviews for Savannah. I knew we had to go when I went to their website and they had a section dedicated to their crispy flounder. I never knew I needed to try crispy flounder, but now it was all I could think about. Fortunately the restaurant did not disappoint. Everything was flavorful and the crispy flounder was such a surprise. Being in the South you would expect something battered and fried. This was just lightly pan fried with a sweet Asian style sauce. It is one of those dishes you try to recreate at home.
