A peek into my art journal
Recently I took a class with the talented Dina Wakley. The class was about drawing faces and I knew it would be a stretch for me. My past attempts at faces have not been very successful. My early attempts are too embarrassing to even show you. Most of them looked startled or possibly had a terrible accident that plastic surgery couldn't fix. I contemplated taking the Picasso way out and just pretending that I meant for my eyes to be uneven, but I found another solution. I would only draw ladies with long bangs drawn to one side, completely covering their other eye. HA! Now I only had to draw one eye. Unfortunately my faces still weren't right. They looked very cartoonish and one dimensional.
So after all of that you may wonder why I would sign up for a class about faces. Well, first I love Dina's art. Her book, Art Journal Freedom, accompanied me on my recent trip to Hawaii. I used a long plane ride to soak in all of the inspiration she offered. I also felt the need to stretch myself. Try something I haven't before, something that would make me uncomfortable.
I am happy to report that after 6 hours of class, I not only feel more comfortable with faces, I actually am enjoying drawing them. So much so that I took the challenge to draw 100 faces in 100 days. So here is a peek at some of my practice....
