Artist Date with Yayoi Kusama
Some days are for making art and some days are for wandering around looking at art.
Last week I took the time to visit the Tampa Museum of Art to see Yayoi Kusama's exhibit "Love Is Calling". Stepping into the mirrored box was amazing. Although the room was only about 20 x 20, it seemed to go on forever. Brightly colored cones hung from the ceiling and grew from the floor, creating a magical wonderland. It made you want to wander around and see the room from all angles. I felt like I had just started exploring when the doors opened to allow the next group in.
It was very different to step into a work of art, instead of looking at it on the wall. It made me wonder more about the artist. What are her inspirations? When did her paintings move into rooms? Why does she love dots? Learning about other artists only makes you a better artist. I find studying artists that are very different from you bring the biggest learnings, so I am excited to learn more about her.
