My tips for picking your ONE WORD for 2019
For the past 4 years I have forgone the traditional New Year's Resolutions. In 2014 I heard about the One Word for the year. Instead of a list of resolutions, you pick one word that will guide your year. This appealed to me because my resolutions always changed during the year. Choosing one word would allow me flexibility, but also help me stay focused.
My words for the past years have been:
Create
Focus
Disciplined, and
Cultivate
Each word has helped me achieve more during that year.
So now we are at the end of 2018 and it's time to pick a new word. If you want to join me in picking a word, here are some tips:
- Brainstorm words that appeal to you. Keep a running list and keep adding to it as you think of more words.
- Look up the definition for each word. Sometimes the definition shows me that word is not exactly what I am striving for.
- Look up synonyms for each word. In the past I have found that my brainstormed list leads me to words I had not considered.
- Look back over your list every few days and mark which words jump out to you, I make a mark next to those words. Over a few days, different words will appeal to me, but some words consistently appeal to me.
- Start to fine tune your list and eliminate words that don't fit.
