Project - reused headboard and TV stand
I have recently become interested/obsessed with projects that re-use items that were destined for the trash. Pinterest has so many projects that take items and reuse them in unexpected ways. I've dabbled in a little "upcycling", but haven't taken on a larger project until now.
A neighbor recently moved out and had left some wrought iron chairs in need of repair that she gifted to me. When I went to pick them up I saw a discarded headboard in her backyard. As soon as I saw it, I knew it should become part of a bench. After a quick Facebook message to my neighbor, I was also the proud owner of a headboard. Here I have to point out how EXCITED my husband was to see two more projects come into my art studio. (How do you type sarcastically???)
My son's school has an annual auction to fund the PTO. I knew a bench would be a great item to donate for the auction. I had a free headboard that would be the back of the bench, but now I had to find something to serve as the seat. I only had about 3 weeks to get the project done, so when I couldn't find another dumpster item that would work, I had to head to the thrift stores. After a few hours on a Saturday, I found just what I needed at Goodwill. It was a TV stand that was the right width and height. Although it was a cheap-o made from particle board, it was sturdy and only $15! Even the Goodwill employee who was loading it into my car looked a little skeptical of the red and black crackle paint job.
As you can tell from the picture, the TV stand was meant to go in a corner. First thing I had to do was mark where to cut off a triangular piece in the back. Since the TV stand had shelves, but no drawers, it was pretty simple using my new favorite toy, a cordless circular saw. A little finishing with a handsaw and I was ready for some sanding. Actually, lots of sanding.
A little primer and paint later and we are starting to get somewhere. I picked an aqua paint that wasn't quite "Tiffany blue", but I thought would look good with a little antiquing when I was done. I also bought two glass knobs from Hobby Lobby that didn't quite match, but looked like I had found them on an old piece of furniture.
With the two pieces done, I just needed my hubby's help figuring out how to firmly attach the two pieces. Fortunately I married a handyman who disguises himself as an accountant during the day. A few brackets later and we had a bench! I delivered it the next morning to school and added a pillow and rug I found on clearance at Target. With less than a $50 investment I was able to donate an item that earned $200 for the school. Plus I got to play around with upcycling!
