Friday favorite...yummy food

If you talk to me on Fridays, you already know what food I am obsessed with.  Every Friday I start getting excited about Saturday morning and what it holds.  I have even corrupted my 5-year-old son.  He starts talking about them on Wednesday, asking if we are going to get them on Saturday morning.

I am talking about the best beignets I have ever had.  Yes, I said the best.  Before you ask, I have been to the capital of beignets, New Orleans, and had the beautiful snowy dough at Cafe DuMonde and yes, they are better than that.

The Poor Porker was such a surprise the first time I saw them at my local farmer's market.  I was just wandering around the market on a Saturday morning, picking up some produce, seeing what else was for sale that week.  On the corner was this quirky trailer with two sugar dusted people working feverishly.  I had to go see what was going on, if for no other reason than to get a closer inspection of the trailer.  My love of upcycling and re-purposing sang out loud when I got a closer look at the trailer.  I saw door and shutters and old wood, OH MY!  That's when I noticed what they were selling....BEIGNETS.  You had me at fried dough!

While I waited for my freshly made beignets to be coated with a cloud of powdered sugar, I looked around at the people also waiting.  Several of them were obvious regulars and even more seemed to have a group that met every Saturday morning for beignets and wonderful chicory coffee.  I felt like I had discovered the cool place to hang out.

When Robyn called my name I tried not to skip over and laugh at the people still waiting.  I opened the brown bag to release a puff of powdered sugar.  And that is when I discovered the best Saturday morning breakfast.  Light, puffy, sweet and unforgettable.

So, if you are every hanging out in downtown Lakeland on a Saturday morning, stop by the Lakeland Downtown Farmer's Curb Market.  Just don't try to cut in front of me in line.  I will hurt you.
